1. Long ago and far away, on the island of Okinawa, karate was born. Later, in the 1300′s, karate came to China, and then to Japan in the early 1900′s. Finally, in 1945, the first martial arts school in the U.S.A. opened. Today in the United States, karate can be taught as a sport, for exercise, and self defense. It involves a series of different techniques, such as punches and kicks, and sparring, which is fighting other people with gear on for protection. Karate is an enjoyable sport that includes many different unique aspects.

2. In 1999, Samantha remembers walking into a karate studio, Imperatori Karate, in Atlanta, Georgia. She took off her shoes and joined a beginner class. Looking around, she saw all of the techniques the other kids were doing, and soon caught on, learning a few of the basic techniques in karate. In the United States, karate is taught as a sport, for exercise, and self defense. It involves a series of techniques, such as punches and kicks, and sparring, which is fighting other people while wearing gear for protection. 3. Ever thought about being attacked? That’s what I thought. Many Americans are attacked or have been in a situation where they could be hurt. Do you want to be one of those people whose lives are put in danger? Learning self defense in karate is one way to protect yourself if you become in a dangerous situation. Karate is an enjoyable sport that includes many different unique aspects.

4. In 1984, “Karate Kid” was released, starring Ralph Macchio. Though the “Karate Kid” came out in the late 1900′s, karate really started a long time ago. Now a days, karate is taught as a sport in America, for exercise and self defense. It involves a variety of techniques, such as punches and kicks, and sparring, which is fighting other people while wearing gear for protection. Halloween Story

The Monster Mash

It was Halloween night, and all through the town, all the creatures were stirring, even the monsters in the haunted house,

“Mom!” yelled Suzie, “We’ve got to hurry! The Monster Mash party’s going to start, in like, five minutes!”

Suzie, an eleven-year-old, loved Halloween. In fact, it was her favorite holiday!

“I’m coming honey! Are you in your costume?” replied Suzie’s mom.

“Yep! How do you like it?” Suzie asked her mom.

Suzie was wearing a mummy costume, made out of three rolls of unwrapped toilet paper. Suzie’s older sister, Linda, was also dressed in a costume. She was a twelve-year-old transformed into a zombie for Halloween,

“I love your zombie costume, sweetie!” said their mom.

As they walked out the front door of their house and started to make their way to the party, they noticed something very, very different about the other people in their town, but they just didn’t know what. When they arrived at the party, Linda ran directly toward the drink table. She grabbed what looked like red punch, but smelled like mold. The first drop of the liquid touched her lips, and trickled down her throat. Suddenly, Linda dropped the cup and headed toward the old haunted house. Suzie, who wanted to be just like Linda, told her mom that she’d be right back, and hurried after her sister.

“Hey, Linda!” Suzie hollered, “Linda! Wait up!”

But Linda didn’t wait up. She didn’t even look back, which sweet Linda would usually do. At first, Suzie thought that Linda was just trying to scare her. Then, Linda entered the old, deserted, dark and spooky haunted house. That’s when Suzie realized something was wrong. She knew that Linda was terrified of the haunted house, Linda has told her herself! Also, the house had been deserted for almost thirty years, and no one, in all of those thirty years, had ever ventured beyond the rotted wood doors that guarded the haunted house. Suzie sprinted back to the Monster Mash party to tell her mom. Just then, Suzie stopped and her heart skipped a beat.

“Mom! Mom, no! Don’t go in there! Mom! Mommy!” Suzie yelled franticly, breaking into a cry.

Her mom didn’t look over and even acknowledge Suzie. Suzie became terrified. She quickly turned around and ran after her mother, who by now was reaching the top step of the haunted house. Only a few heartbeats later, Suzie herself entered what she liked to call the “Death Trap”, because it was deserted. Silently but still quickly, Suzie found herself scurrying after her mother. A right turn, then a left, and then another left. She had just entered what she thought to be the living room. There they were, her mom, her sister, and even some of her neighbors and classmates, they were all there, just standing, waiting. Suzie, by now, was scared out of her pants, desperately wanting to flea the haunted house, but she didn’t. She had to help her mom and Linda. First, Suzie tried to talk to them.

“Hey, Linda! We won our last softball game! Isn’t that great? An undefeated season!”

Then, after no response once more, she tried her mom.

“Are you exited for the annual bake-off, mommy? Oh, and can I sleep over Sarah’s house tomorrow night?”

Once more, no response from her mom either. Just then, she heard a quiet noise, so quiet, that she had to strain to hear it. The noise was getting louder, louder, and now, it was as loud as the bell at her school. Then she saw it. Big, dark, masked.Suzie didn’t know what to make of, of that thing! So, she decided to play along, to act as zombie-like as the rest of her neighbors. Suddenly, it came to her after she saw the pointy hat. The noise was the witch, cackling, as she gradually made a foggy appearance into the room.

“Do exactly as I say!” the witch said in a tone of what Suzie thought was warning, “Go to the Monster Mash party, and make everyone you see drink my spell! When you finished that, report back to me, and I will enslave you, and turn the rest of the world into my zombies!” while doing her evil laugh, Suzie couldn’t help but gasp, causing the witch to look in her direction, “Who was that? Speak now, or you will be turned into a toad!” Suzie didn’t speak, she just continued to look straight ahead with her hands by her side, back up straight. When no one spoke, the witch thought, “I figure it was only my imagination,” and with that, the witch vanished, leaving behind only a cloud of smoke. Suddenly, all of the zombies in the room started heading towards the party, so Suzie followed, knowing that she must find a way to reverse the witch’s evil spell. Finally, the mob of monsters reached the Monster Mash party. They filled up fifty-five glasses of goat blood, ogre mucus, and cinnamon- the ingredients used in the witch’s concoction. Then, they made their way over to the party guests, and forced the wicked potion down the innocent people’s throats. All of a sudden, everyone, including the people who were already zombies, froze, and marched to the haunted house. Suzie followed the crowd once more, and as she approached the house, she noticed a book lying on a large stone located near the left side of the house on the lifeless hill. Slowly, she parted from the group, and headed towards the book. She read the title, “The Witch’s Guide to Spells, Potions, and Reverse-Spells and Potions.” Silently and quickly, Suzie grabbed the witch’s handbook and scurried off to the massive tree behind the house. She opened it, look in the index, and there it was, just what she needed: “How to reverse zombie spells-page 36”. Suzie flipped to page 36, eager to find a cure for her mom and sister, and the rest of her town. Then, she lost most of her hope when she read the recipe: one mouse, two honey bees, thirteen four-leaf clovers, five tablespoons of salt.

“There is no way I can make this potion on my own,” thought Suzie, loosing even more hope.

Just as she was about to place the book back where she found it, it occurred to her her dad! Her dad had stayed home with the stomach bug, but that meant that he wasn’t a zombie! Suzie rushed home, in hopes that he would be able to help her. When Suzie arrived at her front door, she took out her key and unlocked the well-crafted wooden door. Step, step, step, step, step. Suzie made her way up the stairs to her parent’s bedroom.

“Dad! I need your help!” spoke Suzie to the lump under the covers.

“Hu? What? Suzie? Oh, hello darling! You’re back so soon! It’s only seven!” said her dad as he forced his tired and sick eyes open.

“Dad, I need your help. This is really serious: mom, Linda, our neighbors…. they’ve all been turned into zombies by the wicked witch!”

“Okay…. Carter William Harring at your service!”

“Great,” said Suzie enthusiastically, “look on page 36, it tells us what we need to do to reverse the spell.

Mr. Harring flipped to page 36.

“Ah, wow, that’s what we need?” Suzie’s father said in shock, “well then, let’s get to it!”

For the next hour Suzie and her father when all over town, searching for the exact ingredients listed. Finally, they found them all, and Suzie lead her dad to the old haunted house.

“Do you want me to hold your hand when we go in there, Suz?” her dad asked, for he was a bit afraid as well.

“Yes please, daddy!”

They joined hands and quickly stepped in side the run-down, old mansion.

“Here we go, daddy, go you have the drink?” Suzie questioned.

“I sure do, here we go.”

The pair sneaked down the hallway, sneaking into the witches entrance, covered in black capes with pointing hats from last year’s Halloween costume.

“Listen, my slaves! Take this potion, and drink it, now! Then, turn around in circles three times! All of you!” Suzie hollered to the crowd of zombies. Then, with a twirl of her cape, she rushed out the door as her dad threw flour into the room, to make it seem as if Suzie was the real witch. Just as Mr. Harring and Suzie hoped, the zombies drank the potion, which was also a success, and transformed back into their regular selves. It was as if nothing had ever happened. The townspeople did wonder why they were in the spooky haunted house, but all the same, they pretended they were never in there. As everyone ventured off to go trick-or-treating, Suzie’s dad pulled Suzie aside and told her,

“Excellent job tonight, Suzie. You saved us all, and Halloween,” after that, he kissed her on her cheek and told her to go run along and have fun.

Songs in My Life

Posted by sedlovett13 on Nov 11, 2008 in Uncategorized

“Well is the baby too hot to rock or maybe to cold? No, the problem is the baby turned twelve years old; and she doesn’t fit, when she tries to sit, in daddy’s lap anymore!”

Just like Kino had many songs in his life, I have many songs in my life. Some of these songs float back into my mind quiet often, even though they really all do. My meaningful songs include my Song of Childhood, Song of Memories, Song of Happiness, and Song of 2008.

First, my Song of Childhood comes into my head when I remember my childhood days. “Can’t Rock the Baby” by Joe Scruggs is this masterpiece in my mind. This sweet song by Joe Scruggs was sung to me by my dad for a very long time. Whenever I hear the touching music that makes up this song, my memorable childhood days rush back into my mind. Therefore, “Can’t Rock the Baby” remains a significant song in my life, and still is very meaningful to me, bringing back glorious memories of my childhood. The song’s lyrics help to bring back these memories of my childhood so far. The lyrics say how a daddy cannot rock his baby because she just turned twelve years old. Since I am a little older than twelve now, the memories of the years past flow back into my mind as I listen to the music playig through my head. Everyone has their favorite words to their favorite songs that always stick in their head. This is the case for me with this song. My favorite parts would most definitly have to be, “Well is the baby too hot too rock or maybe too cold? No, the problem is the baby turned twelve years old. And she doesn’t fit, when she tries to sit, in daddy’s lap anymore!”

Another one of my favorite parts is, “Daddy can’t rock the baby, oh no! Daddy can’t rock the baby, oh no! Daddy can’t rock the baby, oh no! ‘Cause the baby turned twelve years old.”

In addition to having Songs of Childhood, I also have Songs of Memories.

I have two main Songs of Memories: Can’t Rock the Baby and Seasons of Love. Can’t Rock the Baby is included because it brings back the memories of my childhood and my past. Also, Seasons of Love brings back more recent memories; the ones from sixth grade.

From kindergarten through sixth grade, I attended Trinity School, an elementary school located near Lovett and Westminster. Anyways, sixth grade was my last year at Trinity, my last year of elementary school. That was the year that I graduated and moved into The Lovett School, which was right near by Trinity. Although all of my life has passed me by so fast, or at least it seems that way, sixth grade was, well my last year seeing the people I had grown up with every single day at school. The song tells about the 500 hundred, 25 thousand, 600 minutes in a year, and all of the terrific moments that pass by in that time. The song makes me think about how there are so many wonderful moments in our lives, and we should appreciate and pay attention to each and every one of them; to “live in the moment”, as some of my Trinity teachers would say.

Below is a youtube video of the song, Seasons of Love.

Seasons of Love touches my heart each and every time that I listen to it. I hope that you enjoyed listening to it as well.

Next, is my Songs of Happiness. Out of all of the songs that bring me happiness, I’ve chosen to tell you about Three is the Magic Number, from School House Rock. This song gets me pumped up, and always gets me to sing along. Yes, it is educational…. but it is a really great song all the same! I like when the lyrics say a little story about a family of three, and how it even goes through the multiples of three up to thirty! It’s an extremely fantastic and fun song.

Isn’t it wonderful!

Overall, Songs of Happiness are yet another category of songs making up my life.

Finally, is my Song of 2008. Since I am currenly in 8th grade, next year I will be moving into high school. And, because this is my last year of middle school, I have picked the song, You’re Gonna Miss This by Trace Adkins, to represent 2008. I mean, I really can’t believe that next year at this time, I’ll be in HIGH SCHOOL! Like I said earlier, time travels by so fast, and, the truth is that I can’t do anything about that expect enjoy each moment that I have. I adore this song because it talks about how you’re going to miss life because it travels before your eyes so quickly, and you’ve just got to enjoy where you are RIGHT NOW.

Please, just, enjoy where you are at this moment, and realize that you’re not going to be a kid forever.

In conclusion, all of these songs bring back great memories and have special meanings to me. I think of all of them whenever I feel happiness, think about this year, my past, my life so far. My life is only at it’s beginning. As I grow older and have new experiences, these songs in my life will help tie the ribbon around my gift of life. So, just as Kino had many songs in his life, I have many songs in mine, songs of childhood, memories, happiness, 2008, and many more.

April Contest: Ice-Cream

Posted by sedlovett13 on Apr 3, 2008 in Contests

Time for this month’s contest! This month, I want you to come up with a new ice-cream flavor. Yes, it can be wacky, multi-colored, you name it! Unlike last month’s contest, I’ll have more than one winner. To make this more challenging, I’m not going to write what the catagory’s are.

For April’s contest, I’ll look for,

  • a name for the ice-cream
  • a description of the ice-cream (color, taste, smell…)
  • creativity
  • ingredients ( for example, Oreo cookies, mint, peanut butter…)  and type of “base ice-cream” (for example, chocolate ice-cream or vanilla ice-cream or maybe even strawberry ice-cream…)

Have fun and good luck!

“Annexe” Impressions

Posted by sedlovett13 on Apr 3, 2008 in My Bookworms, Uncategorized

Samantha. She is so sweet… which is why I was surprised to find out that she takes karate! Impressions, everyone has them. Impressions aren’t always about personality or appearence, sometimes they have to do with things you notice about a person. For example, Anne Frank wrote to Kitty, her diary, about how she feels and what she’s noticed about her family and other people she was living with in the “Secret Annexe”. Here’s some bits and pieces of her impressions:

“Mr. Van Daan. He has the best opinion, he knows the most about everything.

Madame. She is the guilty one in all the arguments. I suppose she thinks: “Everyone is interested in what Mrs. Van Daan says.” One, she is industrious, two, gay, three, a coquette-and, occasionally, pretty.

Number four- Margot. Eats like a mouse and doesn’t talk at all.

Besides her-Mummy. Good appetite, very talkative.

Numbers six and seven. I won’t say much about Daddy and me. He looks first to see if everyone else has something.

Dr. Dussel. Helps himself, never looks up, eats and doesn’t talk.”

I have impressions too. So do you. So did Anne Frank.

What are your impressions? Are they personality impressions, appearence impressions, or just “little things you’ve noticed” impressions? How many new impressions do you discover each day? Do your impressions change?

Laughter-noun. A bubbling, contagious sound that spills out of someones mouth. Can be loud, soft, and come in all varieties depending on personal preference. Occasionally laughter leads to choking, crying, or snorting! Laughter usually brings with it good times, and a stomach ache if you laugh too hard!
